What are cockroaches: Cockroaches are a type of insect known as a scavenger. They like to live in any type of environment as long as they have access to food and a good place to breed. Cockroaches are very fast efficient breeders. They can cause a big issue with a small amount of time.

American Cockroaches: This species of cockroaches spend most of their time outside, but will occasionally come into homes. They are one of the largest in its species with some of them getting to be roughly two inches in size. They are red-brown and typically look like they have an eight right below their heads.

German Cockroaches: These are smaller in size compared to the other species. They typically like to live within the walls of homes. They are also harder to get rid of than American or oriental cockroaches as they reside in the home. German cockroaches are a light brown or tan in color and appear to have two black stripes behind their head.

Oriental Cockroaches: This species of roaches can also be known as a water bug. They are known by this name as they tend to live around places where they have access to water such as sewers and the drains of sinks. They are darker in color and they have a distinctive stale odor to them.

Are cockroaches dangerous: Some roaches can carry different bacteria on them. Most carry that bacteria on their legs wherever they go. Since they carry different types of bacteria they can infect your food and different places in the home making you and your family sick. Some people, mainly small children, can have severe reactions to their dead skin or even feces that they can leave around the home. Most species of cockroaches can even chew through books and furniture causing even bigger issues.

Why do I have a cockroach problem: Cockroaches like to be in places where they have easy access to food and shelter like many pests. Any place where there is pet food or even feces,  even open trash cans, can attract the roaches as they have a stronger scent that attracts them. Cockroaches can make their way into the home through cracks in the foundation of the home or any holes in the siding left by cables or wires. Also if you have purchased any used furniture without inspecting it first they may be hiding in there.

Where will I find cockroaches: Depending on the species of roach there are a few places you can find them. Most of them enjoy places where it is damp and they have lots of shelter. Roaches like to search for food at night. Oriental cockroaches as noted above like to live by places that are close to a water source. American cockroaches prefer to live outside in dark damp places but if they come inside the home they like to live in places such as the kitchen and bathroom. German cockroaches love to be inside the home where they have easy access to cupboards and small spaces such as behind the stove or fridges in kitchens.

How can I prevent cockroaches:

  • Keep the any area where you make and store food clean and free of any small scraps
  • Check and make sure that there are no easy access points on the outside of the home
  • Since they like the moist areas make sure you keep the interior of the home dry, using a dehumidifier if necessary
  • Make sure trash cans have a secure, airtight lid
  • Make sure if you have any leaky fixtures that you repair them as soon as possible.
